Dealing with domestic violence on local level

National Council for Gender Equality has implemented the project "Act and influence effectively against domestic violence" supported by UNFPA, through which local coordinative bodies have been established to address domestic violence in the municipalities: Centar/Skopje, Krivogashtani and Doleni.

The objective of the local coordinative bodies is coordinated action of the relevant stakeholders in the cases of domestic violence, as well as action action on prevention from domestic violence through education in the institutions.

The local coordinative bodies (LCB) are part of the municipal structures and are composed of relevant representatives from the municipality, social work centers, police and educational and health institutions on local level. LCB is an institutional mechanism for more efficient assistance and support of victims of domestic violence on local level.

In the framework of the campaign 16 Days Activism Against Domestic Violence, as part of the project, in the municipalities Skopje, Krivogashtani and Dolneni also the theater play "Human Teeth Mark" was performed.

Protection of victims of domestic violence

National Council for Gender Equality conducted activities with the municipal leaderships and the private sector aimed at protection of victims of domestic violence.

The National Council for Gender Equality conducted 4 seminars with 100 representatives of municipal leaderships and 4 regional meetings with 100 representatives of the private sector, from 25 municipalities from Republic of Macedonia.

These seminars were aimed at sensibilization of municipal leaderships and private sector for the problem of domestic violence and informing about the Program for economic empowerment of women victims of domestic violence, with particular emphasis on subsidized employment measure for women victims of domestic violence.

Legal aid for victims of domestic violence

National Council for Gender Equality has opened free legal aid services for victims of domestic violence.

In the frame of the project “I have the right to be protected”, the National Council for Gender Equality opened three free legal aid services for victims of domestic violence, free legal aid service in Veles (covering the municipalities: Veles, Gradsko and Chashka), free legal aid service in Kavadarci (covering the municipalities: Kavadarci, Demir Kapija, Negotino and Rosoman) and free legal aid service in Krivogashtani (covering the municipalities: Krivogashtani, Doleni, Prilep and Krushevo).

Humanitarian cocktail for St. Vasilij (Vasilica)

Traditionally, every year, National Council of Women of Macedonia - SOZM has organized a humanitarian cocktail for the religious holiday Vasilica (St. Vasilij).

This year National Council of Women of Republic of Macedonia with the support of the Mayor of Municipality Centar - Vladimir Todorovikj has organized the humanitarian cocktail on 14.01.2010 (Thursday) in the hotel "Holiday Inn" - Skopje commencing at 12:00h.

The collected funds will be used for scholarship for students in the first year of university education coming from families that are not able to provide for the schooling of their children.

FREJA Forum

National Council of Women of the Republic of Macedonia this year too is one of the partner organizations that organize and participate at the Freja Forum 2009 which took place from 13 to 15 November in Belgrade.

Members of the National Council of Women of Macedonia, their collaborators, representatives from the business sector, from the local self-government units and from the Municipality Centar, as well as eminent persons from the countries in the region and from the EU participated at the Forum.

Freja Forum this year is dedicated to democracy, equal opportunities and quality of life.

The purpose is to gather in one place all the various representatives from the Western Balkan countries and EU member-states that would lead a dialogue for strengthening democracy and would improve the quality of life in Europe and in the Balkans.

National Council of Women of Macedonia and Municipality Centar this year (2010) will host the Freja Forum in Skopje.
